Online Arguments

Rihanna vs. Ciara Twitter Battle

While this feud is a little bit dated, I think this argument provides both positive and negative examples of online communication. I chose this conversation because even though the argument is short lived, I think it highlights some important aspects of social media feuds. The lack of in person interaction allows Rihanna and Ciara to use sarcasm and hateful comments which can escalate the problem. Although there are some concerns, Ciara offers to meet up in person in order to resolve the issue at hand in a more professional manner.

Three negative examples and concerns with this online argument

  1. At the start of the argument, Rihanna uses a hint of sarcasm which can be difficult to comprehend in an online setting.
  2. The misunderstanding in the argument quickly turned to making negative and hateful comments about one another. This can escalate the argument and create a bigger conflict which can lead to poor mental health outcomes.
  3. Towards the end, Rihanna stops the argument abruptly by stating that she is sorry, but the concern is that the source of the argument hasn't been addressed. Rather than resolving the problem, Rihanna aims to forget about it and push the negative feelings under the rug.
Five rules for how people should argue correctly online

  1. It is imperative to practice empathy.
  2. Reread your comments to ensure that they aren't hateful or negative.
  3. Assess your mood and determine whether or not you are in the right mindset to have a constructive conversation
  4. Have an open mind rather than being closed off.
  5. Do your research on the topic and provide credible evidence when necessary.
