Do different social networking sites offer different benefits and drawbacks?
Depending on the social networking platform, benefits and drawbacks may vary. Instagram, for instance, is a platform used to share photos and communicate online. Although Instagram is meant to be a way to know what is going on in other people's lives through the use of photos, people tend to only put forward the good aspects of their lives. This can lead to poor mental health outcomes because people are trying to live up to unrealistic standards. Not many people post about the difficult things that they are experiencing on Instagram which leaves people feeling as though their life is mediocre in comparison to others. On the other hand, social networking sites, such as LinkedIn, may provide more benefits than drawbacks. LinkedIn is a platform that is used for social networking and potential job search. The goal of that platform is to connect people and foster success and productivity. Although most social networking platforms have benefits, many of them also produce negative outcomes due to jealousy, comparison, and unattainable expectations.
Is there an ideal number of “friends” or connections individuals have on Facebook that can improve their mental health?
Although the number of social media friends that you have can provide minor gratification, there is always a need for more. Gaining followers often provides a small amount of joy at the moment, but due to the addictive nature of having more friends, people become eager to keep increasing that number. The instant satisfaction may improve mental health for a short period of time but in the long run, mental health may worsen as their follower goals haven't been met. Many people compare themselves to others when it comes to social media followers and people feel the need to keep up with others. The constant comparison can lead to negative feelings and decrease one's overall well-being.
